World Press Freedom Day, 03 May

“Access to Information and the Empowerment of People” is slogan of this year’s World Press Freedom Day, celebrated across the world. The day has been celebrated regularly by the UN and other relevant organizaiton since 1993 when the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed World Press Freedom Day, following a recommendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991. The international day is celebrated to acknowledge the right to freedom of expression and information.

The day is meant to serve as an occasion that draws attention of governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to violations of people’s right to free speech and information, and to remind the as civil society of the crucial role free speech plays in strengthening democracies and fostering development around the world.
