GB police demand 100pc raise in salary

GILGIT: Gilgit-Baltistan police Thursday boycotted their duty in protest against ‘insufficient’ increase in their salaries, sources said. They were protesting against the 50pc raise in their salaries as was announced in the annual budget presented in the assembly on Wednesday, sources said, adding that they wanted 100pc raise in their salaries to make it at par with the rest of provinces as what Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani had committed with them.

Sources said that earlier the jawans gathered in police lines but returned to the duty after higher authorities assured them of conveying their grievances to the concerned quarters. In the budget 2010-11 present in the assembly on Wednesday, all the government officials – including police – have been given 50pc in their salaries apart from other benefits as per government rules. Sources said that police had planned to expand the strike to other districts of Gilgit if the ‘matter’ is not resolved as per their demands 100pc increase. The GB govt in this connection had forwarded a formal proposal to the authorities in federal capital for the approval but that couldn’t get nod for reason best known to them.
