PT Report

Gilgit, August 19: The Karakuram Highway has been opened for traffic between Gilgit and Chilas after the FWO cleared landslides debris at a place called Thalichi, close to Chilas.

Chief Minister and members of his cabinet saw passengers off who had not been able to move for the past 22 days.

It is pertinent to note that access from Rawalpindi to Chilas had been restored through the Babusar Pass, an alternate to the Karakuram Highway.

While opening of the KKH is a good sign for restoration of supply routes to the major towns of Gilgit – Baltistan, the issue of accessing remote smaller villages in various districts is far from over.

The FWO and NHA need to join hands with PWD to ensure opening of inter – village roads in the highly mountainous Gilgit – Baltistan region.
