50 % of GB's total crimes are taking place in district Gilgit: IGP

GB Police was criticized by the CM Shah yesterday for "not being brave enough"

Gilgit, January 21: The Education Minister of Gilgit – Baltistan, Ali Madad Sher, quoted the Inspector General of GB Police as saying that that Gilgit is the most crime infested part of the entire region.

Out of 1548 cases registered during last year across the seven districts of GB, 750 took place in Gilgit District, the IGP has told participants of an All Parties Conference called to resolve the deteriorating law and order situation. A total of 425 policemen and women are stationed in Gilgit for maintenance of peace in the volatile region. Several of these 425 police personnel are also working on VIP security duties.

The IGP has also been quoted as saying that the police officials are without resources and also lack capacity to systematically counter sectarian terrorism.

Dr. Ali, in a press conference, also said that several steps, including expansion of the parliamentary peace committee, imposition of ban on exhibition of arms, keeping private body-guards, establishment of new police check posts in sensitive areas and nabbing of the accused terrorists, are being taken to bring the situation back to normalcy.

It is pertinent to note that targeted attacks on a PMLN leader and some ordinary citizens had again sparked violence and tension in the capital city of Gilgit – Baltistan.
