Gilgit/Islamabad, April 3: Situation in the capital of Gilgit – Baltistan was relatively normalized with arrival of Pakistan Army, after street fights and heavy firing that kept the city hostage for most of the day. Supported by GB Scouts and Rangers, Pak Army is patrolling streets in the city. Curfew has been imposed in to facilitate normalization of the law and order situation.

Earlier in the day at least 7 people were killed in different incidents after a protest rally organized by TAS was allegedly attacked by unknown people with hand grenades. Around 50 people were injured in sectarian clashes triggered by the early morning attack, which had injured two police officials among others.

People reported hearing heavy firing throughout the day, even after the curfew had been imposed. All markets and roads were closed and people remained confined to their houses.

Karakuram International University (KIU) closed – The region’s only university closed, yet again, for indefinite period due to the dangerous situation of law and order. Students of KIU are among the biggest victims of the city’s prolonged unstable condition.

Passengers, Professionals and Students Stranded – Hundreds of people, including students, professionals and commuters, are stranded due to the chaotic law and order situation and the subsequent imposition of curfew in Gilgit. A large number of students from the Karakuram University are forced to stay in Danyore because they could not enter the Gilgit city due to imposition of curfew. Passengers have, meanwhile, taken refuge in different hotels around the General Bus Stand.

    1. Is this Islam? The religion of peace? I think they are just using the name of religion, they have some other ends to achieve through this bloody tool of extremism.

  2. We really feel guilt while seeing worst things happening in GB. It’s hard to show how we are feeling right now because the violence that has been happening in GB for many years. Alas! our leaders are in deep slumber though tyrants have tortured GB, but don’t know when they will awake and save GB.
No matter, what you think, but we want peace back in GB. It is useless to wait for our leaders, because violence is overcoming day by day. Let’s wake ourselves and do something that will save our GB from further destruction and the separation violence.

  5. It is very unfortunate and a real shame that religion is for peace, brotherhood and tranquility but today it is used the otherwise. The leaders should feel mercy on the innocent public as well as the area. Members of civil society and especially the youth should come forward and make voice and play its positive role in restoring peace and rescuing the public from the terrorists.

  6. Who is responsible for this mass killing in Gilgit. Where is the government and were not there police while the sunnis protesting and how did the person or persons get away after attacking with grenades???

We condemn in the strongest terms possible what are apparently vicious and cowardly acts of terrorism against innocent sunni civilians again in Gilgit, Gilgit-Baltistan.

  8. My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam,

I beg you all that for Allah Subhanahu Wa Tha’allah’s sake, please forgive each other and please have some patience for Allah’s sake and bring back peace in Gilgit-Baltistan.

These killings of any human being whether it be from any corner of this earth is never ever going to solve the problems of all, it would rather burn our beautiful motherland together with its people in entirity and would spread the virus of hatred in our clean Gilgit-Baltistan.

May Allah Subhanahu Wa Tha’allah guide us all on the right path and bless us with peace which is the meaning of Islam.

I would urge every single reader of this message to kindly copy it to as maximum people of our motherland as possible especially my message to our future leaders – the youth of Gilgit-Baltistan to get united and work on the frontline of this mission to bring peace and harmony among our simple and originally peaceful people of Gilgit-Baltistan.

I propose a youth and professionals’ conventions at Gilgit-Baltistan level to discuss this menace of killings and hatred and devise a strategy to curb this virus from our historically ever clean land.

With a cry and Tears of blood in eyes,

    Mehmood Hunzai

  12. Sectarian violence is not a new issue in Gilgit Baltistan, this is an issue of concern which still needs to be addressed in order to bring peace and harmony in the area. This could be achieved by coordination among the political stake holders and the religious groups of Gilgit Baltistan.
