Gen. Kayani visits avalanche site, search operation underway

Gayari: COAS addressing Jawans at Siachin where 124 soldiers and 11 civilians working for the Pak Army were buried by a huge avalanche. ISPR

Islamabad, April 8: Efforts are underway to recover bodies of the 124 soldier and 11 civilians buried by a huge snow avalanche that struck in the Gayari sector of Skardu, close to Siachin glacier. Around 200 people, including Army Jawans and civilians, are taking part in the efforts aimed at recovery of the bodies. Experts are of the opinion that it is theoretically impossible for the soldiers to be alive inside the debris.

Meanwhile the Chief of Army Staff, General Kayani, visited Gayari today to see the search operations. He was accompanied by Chief Minister Gilgit – Baltistan, Syed Mehdi Shah, Commander of the 10 Corps and Commander FCNA.

While addressing the Jawans Kayani said that avalanche of such a magnitude was unprecedented in last twenty years of this Battalion Headquarters existence at Gayari. COAS further said that Army has mobilized all available resources with the assistance of PAF to carry out full scale rescue operation. He appreciated the morale and efforts of troops who are braving the harsh weather and inhospitable terrain. COAS instructed the Commanders to optimally utilize all available resources at their disposal and leave no stone unturned to reach out to the entrapped personnel.
