It is often heard that the natural resources are among the various gifts that the Mother Nature has blessed Earth with. Be it the renewable resources such as wind, sunlight etc that can be reasonably replaced or recovered or the nonrenewable resources such as coal, oil etc that take thousands of years to form, these resources are essential for the survival of living things on Earth.

While some of these natural resources can be seen by naked eye in the form of the diverse scenic views, others remain hidden under the various landscapes. These hidden natural resources have to be mined and extracted in order to be used for various purposes. Gemstones are among the various gifts of Mother Nature.

These gemstones are used for different purposes, one of them being used to beautify the ornaments worn. Various countries are home to different gemstones, Pakistan being one of them.

●       Ruby

Available in various hues of pink and blood red, Ruby is named after the Latin word “Ruber” which means red. Often associated with power, passion and love, the gem is the birthstone of people born in July. Hunza valley in Pakistan is considered to be the home of the largest ruby deposits. Moreover, the valley is also the only region in the world, apart from Burma, where “Blood Red” ruby is mined.

●       Topaz

Popular because of its hardness and desirable colors, Topaz is the birthstone for the month of November. Belonging to the pleochroic family of gemstones, Topaz is famous for the different hues of color that can be seen in different directions. Pakistan possesses the only reserves of step cut Topaz which is the most sought after Topaz in the world. The stone is found in Chitral, Kalam and Gilgit.

●        Aquamarine

Considered to be the birthstone of the month of March, aquamarine means seawater in Latin. Considered to be an all-purpose healing stone as it treats spiritual and psychological issues, the stone has huge reserves in Gilgit-Baltistan province of Pakistan.

●       Emerald

Birthstone for people born in the month of May, Emerald enchants its beholder with its sheer beauty.  With hues of yellow and blue, the green colored gemstone is one of the most sought after in the gemstones family. Transparent, sea green colored Emeralds are the most popular and are mined in Mingora, Swat District.

●       Peridot

Peridot is not only the birthstone for people born in August but is also the national stone of Egypt. It is said to possess healing properties and provides its wearer power, happiness, and influence. The green colored stone, with hues of yellow and gold, is mined in Pakistan’s Kohistan area.

●       Corundum

Naturally, a transparent stone, Corundum can have different colors in the presence of impurities. Ruby and Sapphire are its popular types. It is the second hardest mineral after diamond. The Dir region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is home to the pink and purple corundum.
