Noted scholar and author Professor Usman Ali Khan has passed away

Islamabad/Gilgit: Gilgit-Baltistan’s prominent scholar and author, Professor Usman Ali Khan, has passed away at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Rawalpindi. He was 83 years old.

Professor Usman wrote some of the most important books on the history and society of Gilgit-Baltistan. Some of his books are: Karakuram Kay Qabail (The Tribes of Karakoram), Gilgit Ka Inquilab (The Gilgit Rebellion), Jalwa-e-Karakuram (The glory of Karakuram), Shinalogy, Gilgit Ki Rog Kahani (The sorrowful tale of Gilgit), and Khita-e-Karakuram: Zaban aur M’aashra (The Land of Karakuram: Languages and Society).

Born in Gilgit, Professor Usman started his professional career in 1955 as a teacher. He was a distinguished student and professional, winning Gold Medal in B.Ed examination from the University of Punjab. During his career spanning 39 years, Professor Usman served in Gilgit, Diamer, Shigar and Hunza, in different capacities. People remember him fondly and hold him in high esteem for his intellectual prowess, and his humble personality.

He was under treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of CMH during the last week, where he breathed his last. The news of his death was announced during the Jumma prayers in Jamia Masjid, Gilgit, today.

Professor Usman will be laid to rest in Gilgit, his native city, tomorrow.
