GECA & National Book Foundation join hands

PT Report

Islamabad, July 14: Gojal Educational and Cultural Association (GECA) and National Book Foundation, Ministry of Education, have entered into an understanding to initiate several educational/literacy projects. One of the most important projects is establishment of four Village Book Clubs/Libraries – two at Gojal, one at Aliabad Hunza and one at Rawalpindi — to promote reading habits and book culture among the people, in general, and youth, in particular.

According to details the National Book Foundation has agreed to provide books and furniture to three Village Book Clubs being set up in three towns/villages in Gojal Valley — Chipursan, Gulmit and Shimshal  initially, which will be expanded to other villages.

Farman Ali, President GECA, sharing this information with Pamir Times, said that the NBF has also agreed to publish books on history, language, culture, folklore written by students and young writers about their villages as well as Gojal.

GECA has already written letters to all schools in Gojal valley in this regard asking the heads of institutions to circulate the information as well as ask the students to send their articles and manuscripts to the Association by end of September, 2009.

A board comprising writers and intellectuals will select the best articles for publication. Authors of best written articles will be awarded prizes by NBF-GECA. The books will be published in English, Urdu and later in Wakhi languages.

GECA in collaboration with NBF has already established a readers’ club/resource centre in Rawalpindi to provide a student friendly environment for the students and the migrant community of Gojal valley.

gojalThe GECA president  lauded Mr Mazharul Islam, Managing Director NBF, for his sincere efforts and cooperation for the preservation and promotion of the unique cultural heritage of Wakhi people living at the most important geo-strategic knot of four countries – Pakistan, China, Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

He also congratulated the NBF chief on conceiving and launching a unique initiative — Village Book Club — in the country to promote the dwindling book culture and reading habits among the people. This idea impressed our association and we extend our cooperation to NBF in setting up the first Village Book Club in Gojal valley, the largest Tehsil of Hunza-Nagar District.

Giving details about the readers club, Mr Farman Ali said a large number of people including students and youth from Gojal are residing in the twin cities of Islamabad-Rawalpindi. There is no facility of recreation and decent reading atmosphere for them. Quite a few of them are wasting their time having been unable to find appropriate work or education.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, GECA has decided to provide a forum for our people, especially the youth, to take part in positive activities and enrich their knowledge and intellect.

Mr Ali said GECA has already entered into an agreement with Lok Virsa to establish Folklore Societies in three schools – Al-Amin, Gulmit, Chupursan and Naubahar Model school Shimshal – to promote folklore, folk songs and cultural traditions of Gojal among young generation so that they could feel pride in their rich cultural heritage.

There are many more projects and ideas in the pipeline which would be implemented if financial resources permitted us, said Mr Ali.

It may be recalled that GECA in collaboration with Lok Virsa is already making a documentary on Gojal Valley. The task has been assigned to young and promising documentary maker Nisar Ahmed, a graduate from National College of Arts, Lahore who is now-a-days in Gojal.

GECA will also arrange a week-long workshop on paintings in three schools in Gojal Valley in September. Young artist from Hunza Aleem Dad will conduct the workshop at Al-Amin School Gulmit, Moorkhon School and Naubahar School Shimshal.

GECA is also compiling list of renowned artisans and artists from Gojal to be submitted to Lok Virsa so that they could be invited to various exhibitions held from time to time at the Lok Virsa Shakarparian Islamabad or to be sent in various cultural delegations abroad. Some of the aged artisans will be selected for honorarium and annual Pride of Performance Presidential award. Mr Ali requested all the concerned to help GECA in compiling the list.

The Old Man of Ghund (by Salman Rashid)

Chapursan is a right picturesque valley that stretches from the Karakoram Highway at Sost a full sixty kilometres westward to the watershed of the 5185 metre-high Chilinji Pass. Well-watered by many silvery streams and fertilised by the fine loam left behind by a glacier that melted perhaps about four hundred years ago, Chapursan has rich farmlands and orchards. The people, of old Kirghiz stock who speak Wakhi, a language that descends from archaic Persian, are notable for their extreme hardihood and cheerfulness.

Nestling in remote Gojal (as the upper part of Hunza is known), few Pakistanis know of this little paradise. But some may instantly recognise Chapursan as the home of a man who has single-handedly won more laurels for Pakistan than anyone else: the valley is home to the dashing Nazir Sabir (of movie-star good looks to boot), who has climbed the greatest peaks not only at home, but is also the only Pakistani to have summitted Mount Everest.

But that is an aside; a mere introduction to Chapursan Valley. The central part of the valley is home to a tale that is shared by all the villages. This is the story of Baba Ghundi — the Old Man from Ghund. Ghund, they say, is a tiny village that lies somewhere across Wakhan. The Baba, so the tale goes, once came travelling through the valley.

Scenic Chapursan that seems so very much a part of paradise, was in those days afflicted by one terrible bane: the man-eating dragon that dwelt in one of the valley’s lakes and took a daily sacrifice from the people. Lots were drawn and one unfortunate person ordained by fate was left by the lakeshore to be taken by the monster. One day the victim, a young a beautiful girl, sat by the lake tearfully waiting to be devoured when Baba Ghundi chanced upon her and asked her why she wept.

American Alpine Club honors Nazir Sabir

Nazir Sabir

By Farman Ali

(updated)

ISLAMABAD, March 2: The only Pakistani conqueror of Mount Everest, Nazir Sabir, has been given honorary membership of American Alpine Club (AAC) for his “outstanding achievements in Himalayan climbing and services in the field of environmental protection”.

Nazir is one of the few selected climbers outside America who has been given this honour. He was invited to deliver a lecture at the annual dinner of the AAC in Golden, a mountain outpost, in Colorado. AAC President Jim Donini announced the honorary membership for Nazir Sabir on Feb 27.  Nazir was given a standing ovation by a crowd of hundreds of climbers from across America including three of those from the famous 1953 American K2 Expedition at the end of his presentation about Pakistan’s mountain potentials for tourism followed by his slide talk “Mountains of My Dreams” that consisted of 128 selected pictures from his own collection of over 7,000 slides.

Established 106 years ago, AAC is one of the leading mountaineering clubs in the world with great historical achievements all over the world. (click the thumbnails below for larger picture views)

It is worth mentioning that the British Alpine Club, the world’s oldest and pioneering organization in Alpinism around the globe, also gave the same honour to Nazir in 1998. Nazir Sabir later flew to Canada to participate the International Vancouver Mountain Film Festival, an annual feature, as part of his promotional activities and addressed a gathering there, did a slide talk for the Pakistani community organised by the Pakistan Consulate in Vancouver on Feb 29 showing selected pictures from his climbing exploits.

“32 years ago [July 17, 1976], on a remote unclimbed peak in the Karakoram, a young climber fought his way up the final slopes to the summit of the 6660m virgin Paiyu Peak. The first man to step on its virgin summit was an ambitious 20 year old Nazir Sabir followed by Maj Manzoor Hussain…This was the first time a major first ascent was made by Pakistani climbers… It would also mark the beginning of an extraordinary career for Sabir who would go on to distinguish himself as Pakistan’s most accomplished and celebrated high altitude mountaineer,” the citation read at the ceremony says.

“Over the next years he made over 25 expeditions and in 1981, climbing with the Japanese climber, Eiho Otani, Nazir reached the summit of K2 via a new route and without supplementary oxygen. Short on daylight on the summit bid and in a daring display of strength and determination, they survived an open bivouac at nearly 28,000 feet without stove or sleeping bags.

“The following year he climbed both G-II and Broad Peak, in pure alpine style with world’s famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner and close friend Sher Khan. With his ascent of G-I the next year he became the only Pakistani to reach the top of four out of the five 8000 meters high peaks in Pakistan. In 1992 Nazir received the prestigious President’s “Pride of Performance” award for outstanding achievements in mountain sport and then the “Star of Distinction” in 2000 when he became the first Pakistani to reach the summit of Mount Everest,” the citation added.

nazir4.jpg nazir10.jpg

Born at Raminj village in the remote Chipursan Valley of Gojal, northern Hunza, Nazir Sabir started his climbing career with a Japanese expedition to the 7,284 meter high Passu peak in Gojal in 1974. In 1975 he attempted Nanga Parbat (8125m) with a German Expedition. A documentary film of the climb, shown all over Japan, made Nazir Sabir a household name in Japan. Nazir had also picked up Japanese language and could speak it fluently. Later in 1986 he tied the knot with a Japanese girl.

Nazir Sabir is the only Pakistani to have climbed the world’s highest mountain Everest (8850m), on May 17, 2000.  He has also climbed K2 (8616m), the second highest in the world from a new route, West Face, got him respect and distinction in the mountaineering fraternity.

Nazir Sabir lost his elder brother, Inayat Shah, who was buried under an ice avalanche while attempting Diran peak in Nagar with an Army expedition in 1980.

He was elected member of the Northern Area Legislative Council in a landslide vote defeating the self-styled Mir of Hunza, Ghazanfar Ali Khan, in 1994, for the first time as a commoner — yet again climbing another Everest in his own way. The late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto appointed him adviser for education and tourism.

Nazir has travelled extensively lecturing on climbing and promoting tourism, conservation, and education in the mountain regions. In 2002, along with friend and AAC honorary member Harish Kapadia, Nazir participated in the UIAA-sponsored first ever India-Pakistan peace climb held in the Swiss Alps to help focus awareness on the Siachen the world’s highest battleground and pursue a solution to this longstanding conflict.

He was elected President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) in 2004 and re-elected, as ACP chief in 2007, the first non-military to assume the post. As president of the club, he has applied the same energy and passion he has for climbing to implementing positive change in club policy with major streamlining of foreign permit application processes, reduction in peak fees, and aggressive conservation approaches including a complete re-write of expedition procedure and protocol to embrace modern climbing approach.
