Ghizar: Around 12 children die in Gupis region due to viral pneumonia, several hospitalized

Islamabad, March 14: Around twelve children have reportedly died in various village of Tehsil Gupis, District Ghizar, due to viral pneumonia. Several children have been hospitalized, according to local people.
Local people have said that the LHVs of the Aga Khan Health Service working in the are are neither equipped nor trained to control epidemic-like diseases. The government has not taken any action to investigate and develop strategy to control the death of such a a large number of children in a short span of time.
Parents are suffering psychological and economic losses due to heavy expenditures involved in transporting the kids out of the remote areas of Gupis Tehsil, like Barsat, Teru and Gulaghmuli, located in the upper reaches of Ghizar.
A local informed that it costs the parents more than 8,000 rupees to rent a vehicle in order to take the children out of the valley to hospitals in Gilgit and Singul (Ghizar), where relatively better facilities are available.
The locals have condemned the government of Gilgit-Baltistan and the Ghizar district administration for remaining silent spectators despite of the heavy loss of life. They have demanded compensation of the parents whose children have died due to a curable disease.
