IDP Killings: Mehdi Shah not taking action against culprits, says Speaker

Gilgit, May 19: GBLA Speaker Wazir Baig has accused the Chief Minister Syed Mehdi Shah of holding up the report of a judicial commission that probed the killing of a father and a son in Hunza on 11 August 2011 during a peaceful protest.
The Speaker made the startling allegation today while talking to a group of journalists in his chamber at the assembly building. He also accused the Chief Minister of not taking action against the culprits who killed the two Internally Displaced father and son who belonged to the disaster ravaged Ayeenabad (Shishkat) village of the Gojal Valley, Upper Hunza.
The two IDPs were shot dead by police officials who wanted to clear the KKH by dispersing the protesters for a visit of the Chief Minister to the region.
Speaker Wazir Baig, who is known as an outspoken critic of his own party’s government, also said that nothing is known of the tens of millions of rupees collected through a special donation account created by the Chief Minister for the people affected by the Attabad disaster.
The speaker also said that the Chief Minister is creating hurdles for establishment of the headquarters of the Hunza-Nagar district.
Baig said that the government has failed to meet expectations of the people and everyday thousands of people are coming on the roads to protest for one or the other demand.
Responding to a question, he said that competent and honest officials are not being allowed to work in the region. He said that extravagancy of the government officials is draining the region’s resources and basic needs of the people remain unresolved.
