What if the biggest prison has no walls, it doesn’t need bars. It doesn’t need locks. What if it only needs 4 words whispered into your ear since childhood: “What’ll people say?”. This sentence has buried more dreams than any failure ever could. Failure bruises us and teaches us. But fear? Fear follows us like a shadow. It’s the weight we carry in our minds. Invisible but heavy enough to bend our backs.
It makes us apologize for our dreams before we have even chosen them. It makes us small in the rooms, where we were meant to grow.
We are not born quiet, we are taught to be. “Sit properly”. “Lower your voice”, “Don’t choose Arts” “Don’t wear those” and God knows what else. Brick by Brick we build a cage and call it “good behaviour”. We trade curiosity for caution. We choose to trade ‘what I want’ for ‘what will look good on us’. Slowly and unknowingly, we become the performers. And the cruel part is, the audience never claps. They just find something new to comment on.
Now let’s be honest. Who are those people? Are they the ones paying your bills at the end of the month? Are they the ones who sit with you during your failures? Are they the ones who know about the nights you cried, the times you gave up and never did? Are they the ones who’ve seen the efforts you gave it or Are they the ones who understand the reasons behind your choices? Well mostly they are not. They are the people who still struggle with your names sometimes. At the In a year most of them won’t even remember your story.
Yet today, we give them the judge’s seat in the courtroom of our lives. We let a 30-second opinion from a stranger influence a 30-year career, a marriage, the clothes we wear, and even the courage to be ourselves. That’s not respecting society. That’s surrendering your life to people who don’t have to live it.
We have made gossip the CEO of our lives and our dreams the intern. And here comes the real twist: In their eyes, you’ll never win. “Start a business” -> showing off money.
Get a job “Ambitionless”
Marry early “You’re rushing”
Marry late “Something must be wrong”.
Speak loudly “Arrogant”
Speak quietly “Weak”.
The goal post always moves opposite our path.
So why are we running a race where the only prize is temporary silence? The only way to win is to stop playing.
Now close your eyes and imagine a world without the weight. You’d start the things you’ve been postponing. You’d say the truth you’ve been swallowing. You’d wear what you love, study what excites you and live at your own pace. This isn’t about disrespect. Elders, culture and advice matters. But there’s a difference between listening and being ruled. Respect is not fear, polite is not prison and approval is not air. We can breathe without it. Freedom doesn’t start with a revolution. It just starts with one small decision: Choosing over others.
We treat life like we have infinite drafts to edit. We DON’T. Every year we spend asking “what’ll people say?” is a year we can never rewrite. It’s a chapter lived in pencil, erased by the unbearable weight of people’s opinion. And one day, sooner or later, may we get tired. May we pick up a pen and start writing our draft. May the noise dim, the weight lift, and the noise in our head that sounded like the world start sounding like us again.
The world will talk, with us, without us, about us. That’ll never stop. What can stop is us handing them our pen. Opinions are free, regret is expensive. So today, let’s put the weight down, let’s stop performing and start living. And let’s stop carrying their voices, let’s start becoming our own echoes.
