August 26, 2010, Kathmandu<\/strong>: The World Association of Community Radio\u00a0Broadcasters (AMARC) and the Pakistan Press Foundation<\/a> (PPF) \u00a0have appealed to the\u00a0Government of Pakistan and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority<\/a> (PEMRA) to allow setting up of emergency community radio<\/a> stations in areas\u00a0that have suffered from the current floods in Pakistan.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued here the authorities have been asked to be “flexible and\u00a0responsive to proposals for the establishment of community based\u00a0broadcasting mechanisms so that any information gap that exists among the\u00a0affected people is fulfilled and relief operations are made highly\u00a0effective.”<\/p>\n

AMARC has also offered its ‘knowledge and expertise in setting up emergency\u00a0broadcasting mechanisms, gathered from working around the world in similar\u00a0situations of natural disasters<\/a>“.<\/p>\n

Community radios have played an important role in different times, specially in times of natural disaster for\u00a0aiding relief operations as well as for supporting rehabilitation and\u00a0rebuilding. Good examples in this respect are earthquakes of Haiti<\/a> and\u00a0Chile where AMARC played an important role in facilitating the setting up of\u00a0emergency broadcasting stations. It was not so long ago that community\u00a0radios were brought to the forefront of the efforts to provide relief and\u00a0rehabilitate those affected by the tsunami and floods in Indonesia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

AMARC and PPF highly appreciate the valuable work being carried out by radio\u00a0stations in the flood affected areas. There is a need to complement theses\u00a0efforts by bridging the gaps of information at the very local levels and\u00a0among displaced peoples. This can be effectively achieved by setting up\u00a0emergency community radio stations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
