{"id":27182,"date":"2012-04-07T04:22:26","date_gmt":"2012-04-06T23:22:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pamirtimes.net\/?p=27182"},"modified":"2012-04-07T04:27:05","modified_gmt":"2012-04-06T23:27:05","slug":"three-cups-of-deceit-greg-mortenson-of-cai-found-guilty-of-misusing-charity-funds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pamirtimes.net\/tg\/2012\/04\/07\/three-cups-of-deceit-greg-mortenson-of-cai-found-guilty-of-misusing-charity-funds\/","title":{"rendered":"[Three Cups of Deceit?] Greg Mortenson of CAI found guilty of misusing charity funds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Reuters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">MISSOULA, Mont. \u2014\u00a0<a title=\"More articles about Greg Mortenson.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/m\/greg_mortenson\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\">Greg Mortenson<\/a>, the author of \u201cThree Cups of Tea,\u201d has agreed to pay $1 million to compensate his Montana-based charity for using the group to promote and buy copies of his books, a report from the state attorney general said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The settlement between Mr. Mortenson; leaders of the charity he founded, called the Central Asia Institute; and Montana officials allows the charity to continue providing education to impoverished communities in Pakistan and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The office of the Montana attorney general, Steve Bullock, said its investigation, begun in April 2011 after a \u201c60 Minutes\u201d report, found the Central Asia Institute had spent nearly $4 million since 2006 to buy copies of Mr. Mortenson\u2019s books, \u201cThree Cups of Tea\u201d and \u201cStones Into Schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Buying those books generated royalties for Mr. Mortenson, and although he had agreed to provide a contribution to the Central Asia Institute equal to the amount of royalty payments he received from book sales, he had not done so as of April 2011, the attorney general\u2019s report found.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He also collected money from the institute for travel expenses related to his speaking engagements, and the charity spent about $4.9 million to promote the two books, the report said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The charity\u2019s mission is to advance literacy and education in Central Asia, especially for girls, and it has financed the construction and operation of schools in the region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reuters MISSOULA, Mont. \u2014\u00a0Greg Mortenson, the author of \u201cThree Cups of Tea,\u201d has agreed to pay $1 million to compensate his Montana-based charity for using the group to promote and buy copies of his books, a report from the state attorney general said on Thursday.
