{"id":28728,"date":"2012-07-12T13:51:53","date_gmt":"2012-07-12T08:51:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pamirtimes.net\/?p=28728"},"modified":"2012-07-12T13:51:53","modified_gmt":"2012-07-12T08:51:53","slug":"usaid-director-visits-gb-pledges-more-development-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pamirtimes.net\/tg\/2012\/07\/12\/usaid-director-visits-gb-pledges-more-development-support\/","title":{"rendered":"USAID Director visits GB, pledges more development support"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div id=\"middle-column\">\n<div id=\"middle-content-article\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_28729\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28729\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pamirtimes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Gulmit.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28729\" title=\"Gulmit\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pamirtimes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Gulmit-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pamirtimes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Gulmit.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pamirtimes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Gulmit.jpg?resize=800%2C600&amp;ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pamirtimes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Gulmit.jpg?w=900&amp;ssl=1 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A board giving details about one of the projects at Gulmit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Islamabad:\u00a0<\/strong>United States Agency for International Development Deputy Director Karen Freeman visited different parts of Gilgit &#8211; Baltistan and met community leaders, discussing on-going development projects and potentials for future development support.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to a press release, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has invested approximately $1.2 million over the last two years in local civil society organizations and community groups in the GB region through the U.S. government\u2019s Small Grants and Ambassador\u2019s Fund Programs.\u00a0 The projects support existing community initiatives to restore flood damaged schools, build new dormitories to improve student\u2019s access to secondary education, improve the community library, stimulate jobs, and improve agricultural production through irrigation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During her visit, Freeman also visited two education projects, one in Gulmit and another in Gilgit Village Singal.\u00a0 In Gulmit, Freeman visited with students, parents, and teachers who are benefitting from the construction of a hostel for female students in a disaster-hit area of Hunza.\u00a0 At least 40 female students will stay in the hostel every year.\u00a0\u00a0 Freeman toured the school and met with students, where she emphasized that the United States government\u00a0 is committed to not only helping communities rebuild after disasters like the 2010 floods, but also to improving access to quality education and teachers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Freeman met women bee keepers of GB who are beneficiaries of a joint USAID-Hashoo Foundation project called \u201cPlan Bee.\u201d The project provides training and materials to women bee-keepers, and helps them find lucrative markets for their products.\u00a0 \u201cThe American people believe in entrepreneurship.\u00a0 This project not only improves incomes for 450 women, but it also has a ripple effect as women invest their income in their families, particularly the children\u2019s education, which helps the wider community and the future of Pakistan.\u00a0 We are proud to partner with the Hashoo Foundation, which plays such a vital role in giving back to the community and serves as a model for others in philanthropy,\u201d said Freeman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u201cThrough USAID\u2019s Small Grants and Ambassador\u2019s Fund Programs we work together to identify projects that will not only directly benefit the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, but will also be developed, led, and implanted by the communities.\u00a0 We see these funds as a way to recognize and empower local heroes.\u00a0 We are proud to stand with you as you lead the way to a brighter future for Pakistan,\u201d said Freeman.\u00a0 The United State Government\u2019s Small Grants and Ambassador\u2019s Fund Program in Pakistan supports civil society organizations by providing grants for social and economic development at the grass roots level.
