This was said by Asif Merchant, CEO Aga Khan Planning and Building Service Pakistan during a stakeholder consultation workshop in a local hotel at Gilgit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">He said about 86% of the households in Northern Areas are using biomass for heating and cooking purposes which results in depletion of forests. He said the project will initially focus to install stoves with water warming facility, roof hatch window, floor, roof and wall insulation products in ten thousand households in about 200 villages of Gilgit and Ghizer districts and later on to other districts of Northern Areas and Chitral. He said the project will help to control deforestation by saving household level wood consumption besides having health and economic benefits. He said the project will offer special incentives in order to encourage households to install at least three products.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Karimullah Baig Assistant Manager BACIP in his briefing said that BACIP has developed more than 60 different interventions which have increased energy efficiency and living conditions in homes of Northern Areas. He said the targeted households have saved an average of three tons of firewood per year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">The representative of IPS , Majeed Merchant said that the project is just an entry point for IPS in Northern Areas and future investments will be made in power generation and other potential areas in the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">The stakeholders stressed the need to provide special incentives for ultra poor households to maximize the impact of the project.
