Gilgit<\/strong>: Pakistan Muslim League PML-N led provincial government Gilgit-Baltistan cancelled the registration of 229 non-governmental organizations (NGO) in Baltistan region because they were not functional, said Assistant Commissioner Skardu \u00a0Nasir Nadeem on Friday<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Taking to the Nation Nasir Nadeem said that 336 of NGOs are registered with the social welfare department but a majority of them were found to be non-functiona. The action were taken by National Action plan.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cIn the past there has been no set-up for keeping checks and balances on NGOs in the province, however, a strict scrutiny process has been introduced and now registration papers will only be issued after verification,\u201d said Minister Information Ibrahim Sanai.<\/p>\n

Gilgit Baltistan provincial government had been directed all NGOs to submitted their annual report in concern District commissioner office within week.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo non-governmental organization would be allowed to work in Gilgit-Baltistan declared security zones. The registration, monitoring and security\u00a0clearance\u00a0of all non-governmental organizations would now be done in one week<\/span><\/span>,\u201d \u00a0Sanai Added.<\/p>\n

He said there would be a transparent accountability system detailing sources of funding and objectives of the NGO.<\/p>\n

Thousand of NGOs in the region but about 10 percent are not registered and there is no data base of these organization, all local and foreign NGOs will have to re-register within one week<\/span><\/span> \u00a0and those not doing so or refused registration will have to leave Pakistan.<\/p>\n
