The worst thing about Darker Times of\u00a0 Hunza was that Darkness ruled not just one\u00a0or only few aspects of Hunza society, but each and every aspect was wrapped\u00a0in DARKNESS !<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Deprived of education, Hunza Society\u00a0 was in darkness intellectually, economically,technologically,religiously, politically; just name any aspect the list is endless.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Politically Hunza was a Principality ruled by a hereditary dynastic monarch.The ruler was called Tham. Let&#8217;s call that system Thamship\/Thamdom. (Mir for ruler\u00a0 and Mirdom for the system are used as alternative by so many others). Only Tham and\u00a0 his dear and near ones had access to education, \u00a0freedom of movement\/traveling out of Hunza , and so many other special privileges. Every case was headed by Tham, who was also the self-appointed judge; his decision was final and ultimate in every matter. Every ceremony\/celebration\/festival used to be inaugurated by Tham !<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bofao, a festival to celebrate spring season sowing, like other festivals, used to be inaugurated by Tham in the village where\u00a0his Palace was located.\u00a0 only then could the spring sowing start\u00a0 all over the Hunza &#8211; Kilik\u00a0to Mayon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thamship in Hunza ended in 1974. With its dissolution all the authority associated with Thamship automatically ended !<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This year Bofoa festival was celebrated after a gap of 54 years as part of a cultural restoration programme in Hunza. The\u00a0 arrangements were made by few local\/national\u00a0NGOs working in Hunza. Mr.Ghazanfar Ali Khan, son of last Tham of Hunza Principality, was invited to preside and inaugurate the event. Mr. Ghazanfar mounted on a horse , clad in dress\/ attire \u00a0worn by Thams when Hunza was a principality (till 1974) and inaugurated the ceremony. Mr.Ghazanfar and the community members performed all the formalities\/activities traditionally as used to be performed in past. Everyone was filled with spirit of celebrations!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The event got vast media coverage,\u00a0 huge applause, utmost appreciation. The event was termed as\u00a0 step towards cultural restoration , cultural preservation, cultural glorification etc&#8230;. all the sweet terms irrespective of their relevance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0The QUESTION is:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What do you want? Which\u00a0aspect of your culture is \u00a0revived or restored? Tham system, hereditary\u00a0 dynastic monarch , absolute authority\u00a0 entailed in Tham System and many more other ignorant things of Tham System?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Why don&#8217;t you start reintroducing Darbars\/ Maraka to solve every social problem, custom of Zengaoin, Osham , Jerpa, Bap too \u00a0in the name of cultural restoration?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Come On !<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Either you have misunderstood cultural restoration or you have distorted it for your own marketing, profiteering. Whatsoever be the reason, stop misusing, \u00a0infact abusing, \u00a0concept of cultural restoration!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cultural restoration\u00a0 does not mean\u00a0 indiscriminately and uncritically\u00a0 preservation of every aspect of culture . Blind restoration of culture is nothing short of ignorance. It is a disastrous act and attitude.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cultural restoration is all about innovative restoration of\u00a0 cultural heritage, traditions, customs that involve analysis and modification to make the culture applicable to fulfill needs of the community members for their progress and development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Take inspiration from AKTC (Aga Khan Trust for Culture), which has set examples of cultural restoration and preservation-Khapulu Fort, Shigar Fort, Ganish settlement etc. Look at Altit Fort and Baltit Fort. AKTC has inventively restored the forts. Now they are thriving tourist destination, laden with reference libraries, museums, spots for musical concerts. In name of cultural restoration AKTC does not \u00a0amke\u00a0offspring of Thams sit on Takht, arrange Maraka, as was\u00a0used to be\u00a0 done in those forts when\u00a0 Hunza was principality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other organization and institutions too are supposed to be highly\u00a0 cautious and sensitive while\u00a0 arranging and mobilizing community about restoration of any of cultural aspect. Because this is something with \u00a0community wide\u00a0 and\u00a0 generational impact.\u00a0 One must ensure positive impact !<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yes, if you want to show\u00a0 young generation about how their ancestors\u00a0 lived, then\u00a0you can arrange for mock displays and demonstrations instead of actually reliving the ignorant traditional customs based on class systems!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Indiscriminate restoration of cultural heritage\u00a0 will\u00a0 definitely make Hunza prison of the old traditions.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Roshan Bano\u00a0 Darker times of Hunza were not too distant ! just as recent as\u00a0 1970s and\u00a0 before.
