ISLAMABAD, Sep 26 (APP): Pakistan has allocated an\u00a0amount of 4.5 million dollars to launch multi-year snow\u00a0leopard protection programme in Gilgit-Baltistan region\u00a0next year.<\/p>\n
\u201cAn amount of 4.5 million dollars had been approved for a multi-year snow leopard protection and\u00a0the programme would be launched next year in Gilgit-\u00a0Baltistan region,\u201d said an official of Ministry of
\nClimate Change while talking to APP.<\/p>\n
He said that the snow leopard conservation efforts in Pakistan dated back to the early 70\u2019s with the\u00a0government endorsement of provincial wildlife acts.<\/p>\n
The efforts further picked up in 1990\u2019s when the Snow Leopard Trust initiated its interventions in the\u00a0country, he added.<\/p>\n
He also recalled that Pakistani government also supported and endorsed the Snow Leopard Conservation\u00a0Strategic Plan in 2007 as part of the implementation of\u00a0the Snow Leopard Survival Strategy.<\/p>\n
Since then many wildlife conservation organisations in Pakistan had been implementing the snow\u00a0leopard conservation action plans, respectively, in the\u00a0country by working with the local communities and government departments, he added.<\/p>\n
The Landscape Management Plan of the Karakoram- Pamir Landscape, which is one of the largest snow\u00a0leopard landscapes in the world, is in its final stage\u00a0and would be endorsed after review by the GSLEP\u00a0Secretariat in a few week\u2019s time.<\/p>\n
As a part of efforts to mitigate human-snow leopard conflict, several measures have been undertaken\u00a0in the country, such as: construction of predator-proof\u00a0corrals and compensation programmes in the form of\u00a0livestock insurance schemes initiated by the provincial\u00a0governments in collaboration of non-governmental organisations.<\/p>\n
Snow leopard range in Pakistan spreads across 80,000 square kilometers in the Hindu Kush, Pamir,\u00a0Karakoram and Himalayan Mountain Ranges of northern\u00a0Pakistan.<\/p>\n
An estimated 200-420 snow leopards exist in Pakistan\u2019s northern mountains across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
\n(KPK), Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), and Azad Jammu and Kashmir\u00a0(AJK).<\/p>\n
However, he said, without slowing down global warming to stabilise glacial-melt in 20 snow leopard range countries including Pakistan, habitats of the snow\u00a0leopard cannot be protected.<\/p>\n
Snow leopards habitats in Pakistan\u2019s north are at a serious risk of vanishing as glaciers are rapidly\u00a0melting because of global warming-induced climate change\u00a0impacts.<\/p>\n
He said, snow leopard today was fighting for his survival while glaciers that provide with habitat for him are vanishing because of climate change.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cWith rapidly receding glaciers due to global warming, the habitat of the snow leopard is fast\u00a0vanishing, posing a grave danger to the very survival of\u00a0this snow leopard, which is reflection of God\u2019s beauty
\nin the mountains.\u201d<\/p>\n
He was of the view that global efforts for tackling global warming have suffered a serious blow\u00a0with America\u2019s pullout from the historic global climate\u00a0change accord.<\/p>\n
The agreement, reached at the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) of the United Nations
\nFramework Convention on Climate Change, is an historic\u00a0accord negotiated in December 2015 by 190 countries
