Gilgit - Baltistan
A letter from London
Hello Everyone in Gulmit
I lived in this wonderful village for 2 (1992-94) years and worked at Al Amyn. I have so many amazing memories and have thought of all the amazing friends I made at that time. Nusrat has been to visit me in England but otherwise I’ve managed to lose contact with everyone else. I’ve looked at this website and hope that Zeeshan Ali and Pir Ali are old pupils of mine who have gone on to do great things. There are so many more pupils who will now be influencing others.
As for me – I’m still teaching. I am married with two children – Scarlet who is 5 and Jemima who is 1. I live in Tunbridge Wells which is about an hour from London.
Love to everyone in Gulmit but especially my very dear friend Zareera.
Sophie Rees

When I was 5, My late father got admission in Al Amyn for me, and that was also the initial stage of Al Amyn. I was among the students whe got education from these teachers, Miss Sophie Rees, Mis Cerole, Sir Richerd Harris and Miss Suzuki.
After my matriculation in 2005. I got admission in Aga Khan Higher Secondary School. It was my first english class in AKHSS, Sir Piyar Karim gave us a task to present about your first day at school. After my presentation, Sir said, “AL AMYN, Thats a institution, where students receive modern education including their carriculam and co carricular activities, and their english grammer is very good”. I was glad and thought that our seniors had made a goodwill in AKHSS and that was becose of THESE TEACHERS.
In 2007 I did my intermediate and took admission in Government College University, Lahore. Here also one of our mam uses to say, English of the north strip students are better then these south. I mean the credit goes to our those teachers, who tought us in Al Amyn.
MAM i ever time memorise and miss all the golden moments, like singing Hoki cocki, rouming around, playing, Group works etc. To my friends I use to say that I had spent my University Life in my school.
Here is till the old craming system. How lucky we were that we learnt from you peoples.
Love and regards to Scarlet and Jemima.

Dear Shophie Rees,
I am so happy to hear from you as it not only shows your sincerety and fondness of gulmit Village and Al Amin School but also a great commitment to your profession. I used to be a kid at that time, its true when they say time flies and now I am doing my bachlors and hopefuly graduating next year. It seems a distant memory but I still miss those school years. We as students of Al amin School gulmit are thankful to teachers like you , ( Carole. Suzuki.)who taught us and helped & developed our education in this far flung region of Northern Areas where it was just the begining of English medium schools and we were the first to avail this chance. we as your students havn’t and won’t forget you or let you down.
Congratulations for your wedding and the kids. I hope some day you might travel along this valley again and find it more flourished in education and much much better developed. Thanks also be to this internet globalization, that has connected not only people but memories too.
wish you best of luck in your career and future endeavors,
your student,

Thank you Sophie for remembering AL Amyn.
Was not a student or teacher at that time, but i know from my interactions with the community- the ex Chair Ghulamuddin, the BOG and the Educational Society activists at that time, you and the pioneer teachers contributed alot to bring quality and system to Al Amyn, specifically, and generally through the VSOs to all community based english medium schools in the region.
Al Amyn is following the footsteps and produced some very good students and is generally rated as top 10 school in Gilgit Baltistan (Northern Areas).
Though the secuirty situation in Pakistan is precarious at this juncture of history, while we enjoy a relative fragile peace in these mountains.
The BOG, teachers and Alumni of Al Amyn will be ver happy if you may plan your visit to the area, once the security situation improves in Pakistan, hopefully by next year.
I wonder, if VSOs might be able to come again and provide ‘second generation support’ to the community-based english medium schools, to push them to the next level of trajectory?

Dear teacher, great to be acquainted with you after such a long period. We remember the time we spent together and the inspiration we received from your dedication and efforts as a teacher. Congratulations for getting married and having children. I am one of the students of the first batch of students of Al Amyn if you remember. I have just finished with my masters along with many other fellow students of the first batch. We attribute our success to the commitment and hard work of our teachers and more specifically to you. I would never forget some jolly moments including those when you used to lock us in the class room for not doing our home works and not let us go home until we do our home work. The people of Gulmit will never forget your commitment to the region. Thank you so much.
Dear Miss Sophie

our love, best wishes, and prayers for u and ur childern.
hope u will visit gulmit again in future
Dear miss Sophie
As the oldest students of Al Amyn School have expressed their feelings over your sincerity and commitment through your letter.. it shows your your sincerity with the people og Gojal..
As all of the students have expressed their feelings of that time when you were with us at Al Amyn and we are proud to be ALAMYNIKS… Its that institution was our future builder and still we regard that as our young generation future builder, which was decorated by teachers like you and we all miss that moments which was spent with you..
I am proud to say that i can speak some broken words in english and I thank all my teachers that they have made me trained about international language… As my experience it was that time when we were getting rid of the school life and trying to hide ourselves from the classes but now when i think about Al Amyn i really miss that life and i wish to be there again with teachers like you.
I experienced College life and university life but all are in vain and i very much miss school life..
Regards to Scarlet and Jemima…
