Chilas, May 6: People affected by the Diamer – Bhasha Dam can be seen blocking the Karakuram Highway near Chilas, in order to press the provincial and federal government for acceptance of their demands.
The strategic Karakuram Highway, which will soon be called the Pak-China Economic Corridor, is regularly being blocked due to protests or security reasons. This year, so far, the KKH has remained blocked for more than 20 days, due to protest demonstrations, natural disasters and security reasons.
Today, the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan urged the notables of Diamer to discourage the protesters from blocking the Karakuram Highway every now and then because the closure affects common people more than any one else, he told a delegation from Diamer that called on him.
The KKH is the backbone of Gilgit-Baltistan’s economy and its closure every now and then is causing a lot of stress for commuters, besides causing huge economic loss for the region’s traders and transporters.
