Ghizer: The issue of harassment can be tackled through regular awareness campaigns. This was said by gender experts by addressing a seminar organized at government degree girls college Gahkuch, Ghizer in connection with an international awareness campaign ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’. The event was organized by the Gender and Development section of Aga Khan Rural Support Program (AKRSP). The theme of this year was ‘From peace at home to peace in the world, lets make girls education accessible to all’.
Students highlighted gender issues through speeches, presentations and theatre dramas. The participants appreciated a theatre drama specially directed on women issues in Gilgit-Baltistan. Kosar Bano, GAD manager at AKRSP delivered a detailed presentation on violence against women. Assistant Director of Women Development Directorate Salma Aziz apprised about the efforts of the government agencies in addressing gender based violence.
Besides this event, AKRSP also organized dozens of other awareness activities at different schools, colleges and community centers in Gilgit and Ghizer regions to provide awareness regarding violence against women, child abuse and its prevention.
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence is an international campaign. From 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign is a time to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world.
