Skardu is a historical city of Baltistan and the present seat of government. The city is located at the confluence of Indus and Shigar River. While the city is known for its majestic natural beauty and cultural richness, the lack of basic amenities creates problems for the local people. Prime Minister Gillani had promised in one of his speeches that Skardu and Gilgit will be developed into "Big Cities", but no concrete action has been taken in this regard.
