Hunza: World environment day has been celebrated in Hunza in order to stimulate awareness about the deteriorating environmental issues with particular focus on proper solid waste management and glacier melting to enhance political attention and action.  This year’s environment day in Hunza is more important on the wake of regular Glacier Lake Outbursts Floods (GLOFs) in Ghulkin and Passu glaciers causing huge damages to community properties.

Karakoram Area Development Organisation under Hunza Environmental Committee (HEC) project celebrated environmental week to empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development, promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues and advocate partnership to address the mushrooming environmental issues in the region.

Keep Hunza clean moots and rallies were organised in Aliabad, Karimabad, Gulmit, Nasirabad and Sost with the support of local administration, political representatives, business community, academic institutions, Ismaili Boy Scouts, Girls Guides, Volunteer Corps and other public and civil society organisations.  Special environmental awareness programmes were broadcasted through local cable networks on graving environmental issues.  KADO has installed traffic signal boards and dust bins in Aliabad town with the
support of District Councillor.  Banners were displayed at major market and settlement areas.

The speakers in their speeches said that due to lack of proper environmental strategies problems related to pollution, solid waste management, sewerage and sanitation, town planning, safe drinking water, primary health care and disaster management are getting worst day by day. The speakers stressed public and civil society organisations to devise a collective strategy to address environmental issues in the region.

The rally participants have demanded from the Northern Areas Administration to design an effective solid waste management mechanism for the newly declared Hunza Nagar municipalities. They said, replication of the existing ineffective solid waste management system will further deteriorate the environmental issues in the region.
