Gilgit, March 5: Rumor mongers and propagandists have been a constant cause of panic in Gilgit city. Even during the relatively normal days, messages circulated through cell phones have been a cause of anxiety and stress for the masses, but in the current tense environment they are proving to be even more dangerous.
The whole day messages were circulating about incidents of firing, murders of different political and religious personalities and similar other contentious issues.
People have demanded of the authorities to stop the rumor factories once and for all, to rid the people of the stress.
There also appears to be lack of a mechanism whereby the city administration can relay important information to the masses through radio and television and other media. The government can create an emergency communication cell t update the masses about the situation of law and order, so that the rumor mongers are rendered ineffective and their nefarious designs foiled.
A deadline given by Anjuman-e-Imamia expires in two days, adding to the worries of people. The government has announced that Federal Interior Minister, Rehman Malik, will visit the region and hold meetings with different groups. He is also likely to brief the media about the updates, sources say.
