Shishkat, February 13: A make-shift wooden bridge inaugurated on 31st December 2013 collapsed today due to erosion caused by increase in flow of the dammed Hunza River.

The bridge had been constructed by the Power and Works Department Hunza-Nagar to facilitate movement between Shishkat and Gulmit, two of the villages located in Gojal Valley. Hundreds of people were using the bridge despite of the fact that it had tilted dangerous six days after the inauguration on 6th January 2014. Apparently, no repair or maintenance work was carried out to strengthen the bridge between then and now.

Travelers, women women and children ,were seen using the collapsed bridge (shown in the photograph above) to move between Shishkat and Gulmit. The local people have feared that using the bridge in this condition is dangerous because there are no safety measures in place.
