Spreading Hate: FM channel in Chitral barred from broadcasting live programmes

Chitral, March 13: An FM radio channel has been barred by the district administration from broadcasting live programmes. The decision has been taken in view of the complaints that the radio station was airing provocative hate speech about the Ismaili Muslims and the Kalash community in Chitral.
The district administration has also reprimanded the station owner and managers, warning them against inciting people to violence in the otherwise peaceful region. The religious FM channel has also been asked to stop airing live discussions. They have been asked to record programmes and air them after the approval of the district administration.
The issue of the Radio Station broadcasting hate speech came to the limelight last month after a video threatening the Ismaili and Kalash community came to the fore.
A delegation of the Ismaili community had called on the district administration to apprise them of the hate speech on a radio station running with the permission of PEMRA.
It is pertinent to note that the Supreme Court of Pakistan had taken suo-moto notice of the video threat and it had directed the KPK government to explain the situation on ground in a comprehensive report.
