One case against Baba Jan dismissed as “baseless”

GILGIT:
A session court in Aliabad Hunza has dismissed a case against Baba Jan, the incarcerated progressive leader of Awami Workers Party.

The case was filed against him in his village few years back, while he was in Karachi. He was involved in the case because Baba Jan at that time was leading a public movement against ‘illegal leasing’ of the area’s mineral resources to a non-local influential person. Ehsan Advocated represented Baba Jan in the court.

The court has dismissed the case against Baba Jan, but he will still be in jail, serving multiple life sentences in two other cases given by the region’s “Anti-Terrorism Court”.

Review petitions against the two remaining cases are pending.

Leasing mineral resources to influential non-locals, mostly from KPK, has become a major issue in the region. Recently, the Hunza-Shinaki Youth Movement, through a press release, said that efforts to lease marble mines to a certain “Mohmand” agency would be resisted with full force, if the locals are not taken into confidence.
