Gilgit, December 20: The Gilgit-Baltistan government is planning to increase the powers, as well as the number of seats of local body institutions.

This was stated by GB local bodies minister, Engineer Ismail, while explaining the importance of “local bodies” to the members of GBLA, at the assembly hall. He said that the GB government was aware of the system’s importance and it will undertake necessary steps to enhance them.

Engineer Ismail said that the elections for local bodies will be held in October 2012.

He also said that a  service structure for employees of the local bodies is under consideration. He complained that the previous government had made unnecessary appointments in the Gilgit Municipality, resulting in wastage of development funds for payment of salaries.

It is pertinent to mention that Provincial ministers and some members of Gilgit Baltistan Legislative Assembly had expressed concerns over the appointment of civil administrators in local bodies .

In reaction to yesterday’s tabling of the Local Bodies’ Act in the GBLA, some members had adopted the view that the appointment of civil administrators on the political basis would disturb the system.
