5.3M earthquake hits parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, floods reported in Darel Valley
Islamabad (Updated): People in different parts of Gilgit-Baltistan felt earthquake tremors at around 1:45am in the night. Reports of tremors came from Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Astore and Diamer.
According to information shared by the National Seismic Center based in Karachi, the earthquake took place in the South East of Gilgit, at a depth of 10 kilomteres. The coordinates of the epicenter were reported as 35.57N and 75.26E. The magnitude of the tremor was reported at 5.3 at the Richter scale.
Subakhan Suhail from Astore reported that two “intense” tremors were felt in the valley at 1:40 and 1:42am. There are no reports of losses.
A Chilas based reporters have reported that floods have hit some parts of the remote Darel Valley. Aid teams and police officials have reportedly left to reach the flooded parts of the Darel Valley.
Details about the floods are not available at the moment due to remoteness of the affected area, as well as disruption of electricity and communications network in the Darel Tehsil of Diamer District.
