Kohistan: KKH reopens after three days
Gilgit, December 15: Thousands of commuters breathed a sigh of relief today after remaining stranded on the Karakuram Highway for three days, as protesters opened the road today after successful negotiations with officials. Locals had blocked the road for the last three days protesting against detention of nine people who were protesting against the death of a child at a hospital, allegedly due to negligence of doctor.
Closure of the main road connecting Gilgit-Baltistan with the rest of Pakistan had forced hundreds of passenger buses, small vehicles and goods carrying trucks to stay on the Karakuram Highway in Dassu area of Upper Kohisan in severe cold weather.
The frequent closure of KKH in Kohistan, Hazara and other areas causes severe troubles for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan who rely heavily on the strategic highway, despite of facing many natural and human threats.
Several hundreds of passengers had to walk on foot for miles due to the road closure and search for other vehicles.
