The apple of Baltistan

Apple is produced in a large amount every year in different parts of the Gilgit-Baltitstan region. The apple of Baltistan, particularly, is considered to be of high nutritious value and taste. Unfortunately, the apple cannot reach urban markets in large amounts due to absence of supply chains, poor condition of roads and lack of awareness among the apple farmers. These photographs by Mumtaz Hussain show how apple is collected and transported in the mountain areas of Baltistan.

Unfortunately, a large amount of the apple gets wasted every year. With better storage facilities, access to markets and awareness of marketing technique, the apples of Baltistan and other parts of the GB region can become important sources of livelihood for the people of the mountainous areas.
