Human Rights Observers seeks SAC action over rights violations in GB

March 20: The Gilgit – Baltistan Chapter of Human Rights Observer yesterday presented a report to Chief Judge of GB Supreme Apellate Court, Rana Arshad, requesting him to take Suo-Moto ntoice of the “rights violations” in the region.

In the report HRO has maintained that people of the region have been left at the mercy of terrorists and the government is not taking interest in saving life and properties of the common people. The report further says that seeds of sectarianism were first sowed in the region during 1973. It has since then spread like a cancer in the region, the report stated. In 1988 massive sectarian violence erupted for the first time across the region and claimed lives of dozens of people

In 2005 a Shia cleric Agha Zia ud Din was gunned downed by unknown terrorists, leading to the death of several people in apparently revenge attacks. this killing. The report has also said that some of the victims were burnt alive.

Giving statistics, the report claims that since 1988 up to 3000 women have become widow and 2500 children have been orphaned in sectarian violence. HROGB blamed that government had failed to control the activities of banned outfits.

The report also indicates that people of Gilgit Baltistan are also deprived of basic necessities of life. Power shortage and rise in the wheat price are two main problems of the people.

HROGB has appealed to the CJ to provide justice to the people.

Despite of getting millions of rupees the law enforcing agencies are unable to control the law and order situation”, the report has stated. The murder of an Inspector General of Police (Sakhi Tareen) and a DSP have also been highlighted in the report.
