By: Zulfiqar Ali Khan

Hunza, Nov 13: The Chief Executive NAs took a hard stance over the construction of Basha dam during the meeting of Executive Committee of National Economic Council. He said the reservation of the people of Northern Areas should be cleared before the construction. He said NWFP is trying to create controversies about the location of the dam in order to receive the royalty.

He said the dam would displace thousands of people and inundate thousands of land in Northern Areas whereas NWFP is happy to take the royalty. He warned for consequences, if started the construction without taking care of the rights and interests of the people of NAs.

He said the Northern Areas should be named as Gilgit-Baltistan, as the media has created confusion between the Northern Areas and the war-hit areas of NWFP.

Public circles have appreciated the bold stance of the CE about the important issue of the NAs.

  1. A right move, he must be supported by all members of Northern Areas Legislative Assembly (NALA), as well as people of all walk of life from the area.

  2. A right move in the right direction, I hope our representatives must show responsibility and unity this time, leaving behind their differences and secure the rights of Gilgit-Baltistan in this mega project for which NWFP is waiting to take full benefit of.

Also the CE’s demand for naming the region as Gilgit Baltistan is commendable as we have been raising our voices on this issue since long and the name Northern Areas has been misleading the world about the peace loving people of Gilgit Baltistan, espacially after 9/11.

  3. Great, All the political parties should join hand together and Support CE in order to form a unanimous resolution, we do not oppose the construction of Basha Dam but NA should receive all the entitled benefits and compensations.
