No-taxes package being prepared for Gilgit – Baltistan

PT Report

Islamabad – Having deferred the unpopular decision of tax-imposition in GB, Islamabad is now considering a tax-free regime for the region.

According to details, the federal government has planned to declare the semi-autonomous region as a tax-free zone with to attract foreign investment. “The decision has been taken in view of G-B’s disputed constitutional status which had also forced suspension of tax imposition in the region,” a government official revealed yesterday.

According to the official, the Pakistani premier, Yousuf Raza Gilani, who is also Chairman of the Gilgit – Baltitstan Legislative Council, took the decision yesterday at a high level meeting held in the federal capital.

Apparently, the GB government had demanded share in the NFC awards in return for levying of taxes in the historically deprived region. It is pertinent to note that the people of GB demand seek accession to Pakistan, a demand that the GoP has neglected in view of the region’s disputed political status.
