[Gilgit Violence] Aerial firing and target attacks continue, police arrests several suspects

Gilgit city has remained a major security challenge for the thousands of personnel of different law enforcing agencies deployed here.

Gilgit, Sep 9: Several suspects were rounded up by Gilgit Police during a search operation launched after days of constant aerial firing and target attacks on many people in the biggest city of Gilgit – Baltistan.

Shafi, son of Mohammed Rahim, was injured in a firing incident today in Baseen locality of Gilgit. Police conducted a raid in Baseen and arrested several people on suspicion.

The recent violence spree started after the day-light murder of two brothers at Hunza Chowk, Gilgit, by unknown assailants. Later another man was shot dead near his house and a man was injured in a firing incident.

On Thursday a man called Iftikhar Hussain, resident of Napura, lodged an application with the city police station, accusing Zain-al-Abidin and Mehboob, residents of Baseen, of firing on him.

Police had arrested Wajahat, son of Faqeer Shah, a resident of Danyore, on Wednesday with weapons, including a 1.9 MM gun and 30 rounds, near KIU check post on 7th September.
