Gilgit, January 4: The Frontier Works Organization has clearly failed to deliver on its promises of draining the dammed Hunza River during the last two years. The GB Government should not waste more time and contact the Government of China to take the  project and open the dammed river.

The GB government should also take steps to implement the development projects planned and budgeted as part of the calamity-hit status notified for Gojal Valley. Steps should be taken to rehabilitate the IDPs of Attabad, Sarat, Ayeenabad, Shishkat and Gulmit.

These demands were made by speakers during a conference organized by Rabita Committee Mutasreen-e-Gojal at a hotel here in Gilgit. The speakers also demanded annulment of the Anti-Terrorism Act and free the political workers who have been thrown behind the bar on charges of treason and terrorism.

It was also observed that the government has failed to release funds already received from Islamabad for facilitation of students in the disaster hit area.

Speakers further demanded of the government to provide basic health facilities to the landlocked region of Gojal Valley.

The conference was addressed by MLA Mirza Hussain, President of GB High Court Bar Association Advocate Ehsan Ali, Javed Hussain of the GB Chamber of Commerce and Industries, political workers, representatives of different NGOs and civil society activists.

The conference also approved a 14 points resolution, demanding NATCO service for the affected region, among other facilities.

It is high time now for the Government of Pakistan in general and that of GB in particular to realize the sensitivity of the area and anguish of the public and play its role to bring about changes and improvement in the milieu.
