Russian Climber, Vitaliy Gorelik, succumbs to injuries at K2 base camp

Skardu, February 6: A Russian mountaineer, Vitaliy Gorelik, has scummubed to his injuries and died at the base camp of K2, the second highest peak of the world. He was injured in January during the K2 winter expedition, losing fingers of both his hands to frostbite.

Vitaliy Gorelik had been shifted to the base camp but due to inclement weather he could not be taken to Skardu for medical treatment.

Sources said that he was also suffering from “Hight Sickness”.

His fellow mountaineers, who have called off their expedition, will take the body to home land after the weather gets normal.

  1. Gorelik had frostbite a week ago. He was a thorough gentleman and a great mountaineer. He will be remembered by the mountaineering community and his friends!! He reached the summit of K-2 in 2007 from West Face direct route, a route which was never been attempted by any other mountaineer/team.

    The team of Winter K-2 was consisted of veteran mountaineers. Despite harsh weather conditions they fixed rope up to 7200 meters. But they had to call off the expedition due to sad demise of Vitaliy Gorelik. May his soul rest in the eternal peace!!
