Gilgit-Baltistan Newspapers Society formed to defend rights

Islamabad, October 21: Owners and editors of various newspapers formed a new body to defend rights of the regional press, a statement said.

According to details, the Gilgit-Baltistan Newspapers Society was formally launched today at a meeting held in the federal capital. Mir Tariq Mehmood of Daily Himalaya has been selected as president of the society, Qasim Naseem (Weekly Siachin News) as senior vice president, Dee Jay Mathal (Bang-e-Sahar) as vice president, Tahir Ayub (Weekly Kargil) as general secretary, Mir Aslam Sahar (Daily Baidar) as deputy secretary general and Tariq Hussain (weekly Karakuram) as secretary information.

The newly appointed officials of the society have vowed to protect the rights of the regional press and resolve different issues being faced by the newspaper owners and editors.

The society has expressed concerns about discriminatory treatment meted out to some newspapers. They have resolved to finish yellow journalism from the region.
