Gilgit, February 1: The GB government has freed eight religious and political leaders from jails in Gilgit city. The leaders, including Sheikh Nayyar Abbas, Abdullah Haideri, Attaullah Saqib, Faqeer Shah, Hussain Wali, Himayatullah and Nawab Shah .
Some of the detainees had been arrested almost two months back, under 16 MPO (Maintenance of Public Order), after sectarian violence and tension in Gilgit city. Some of them were first kept in Gahkuch jail while others had escaped and remained in hiding for several weeks, before handing themselves over to the police. They were later transferred to prisons in Gilgit city.
