GILGIT: The students of Karakoram International University (KIU) participated in a drive to clean the route of Chehlum procession in Giglit city on Friday.

A group of students from different departments of KIU main campus Gilgit voluntarily participated in the cleanliness Campaign. The campaign was intended to facilitate the Chehlum procession and raise awareness about pollution free environment.

It has been noted that waste materials have blocked different water channels and the blockages were causing spill-over on different roads in Gilgit city. Municipal committee of Gilgit were using open damping and burning of solid waste to reduce its volume. Uncontrolled open damping on the river side of Chillmish Dass, near to Aga Khan Health Center, has resulted in the degradation of valuable land resource and resulting in long term environmental, aquatic and human health problems.

Students of Karakorum International University (KIU) are involved in community services to promote a green environment in Gilgit.
