11 more ‘Waste Management Companies’ to be established at the cost of 180 mn rupees

Gilgit: The Gilgit-Baltistan govt plans to establish 11 more Waste Management Companies in the region to tackle the rising issue of urban and semi-urban pollution.

This was stated by Chief Minister Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman yesterday during a public gathering.

He said that Waste Management Companies will be established in Aliabad and Sost (Hunza), Nagar, Chilas (Diamer), Jaglote and Danyore (Gilgit), Gahkuch (Ghizer) and other parts of the region.

Establishment of the new companies will cost 180 million rupees. The CM said that an endowment fund will be created to ensure sustainability of the Waste Management Companies.

The Waste Management Companies are already working in Giglti and Skardu, picking garbage from markets and residential areas, at a nominal fee.

Safe disposal of the collected waste, however, remains a major issue.
