GLOF blocks Kurumbar River, forming a lake in Ishkoman Valley

Gilgit/Ishkoman: A Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in Badswat Valley of Tehsil Ishkoman, District Ghizer, has blocked the flow of Karumbar River, forming a lake, which has submerged 12 houses, and destroyed a stretch of the road.

The Karumbar Valley river has started overflowing again, but the stored water looks like a lake, drawing comparisons with the Attabad lake formed in 2010 after a massive landslide.

Efforts to transport aid items to the affected region are hindered by the destruction of the road, while fear of a potential flood that might be caused if the lake’s barrier breaks has also increased among the people living downstream.
