Kharfaq Irrigation and Land Development Project inaugurated in Ghanche district


SKARDU: (PR) Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan Capt. (Rtd) Muhammad Khuram Agha inaugurated Kharfaq Irrigation and Land Development (ILD) Project in Ganche.

Kharfaq ILD project is one of the infrastructure projects of the Economic Transformation Initiative Programme of Planning and Development Government of Gilgit-Baltistan- a co-funded project of IFAD. Scheme implemented through community led implementation approach. Around 5.03 km irrigation channel constructed by the beneficiary community before its completion timelines (one year). The scheme will not only bring 227 acres of barren land under cultivation but will also provide additional water to existing land and will help community to address water scarcity issues. Over 154 households will benefit from the project.

In his speech, the Chief Secretary congratulated all stakeholders who played key role in project implementation. He applauded efforts of community and Scheme Management Committee of village for their hardwork and completion of project in short time. Till todate, out of total 17 irrigation schemes in Ganche since inception of ETI project, five schemes with a command area of over 15300 kanal has been completed and handed over to the beneficiary community. Land development is underway on these completed schemes and concerned departments are assisting communities in agriculture development activities.
