Gilgit, March 27: The shutter-down strike called by Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamat was partially successful as some major markets along the Airport Road remained closed throughout the day. The strike had been called in response to the arrest of ASWJ leader Maulana Attaullah Saqib. He was taken into custody two days back over alleged involvement in an incident in which some miscreants had opened fire on a procession soon after the Kohistan carnage.
In many areas, like Khomar and Jutial, shops remained open.
Protest demonstration were also held in Ghizar where the speakers demanded release of the detained leader.
In some areas of the city shopkeepers resisted efforts by protesters to forcefully shut down shops. Police, Rangers and GB Scout were on high alert.
