China Investment Corporation invited to invest in Diamer dam project

Islamabad: The Ministry of Water and Power Friday invited the China Investment Corporation (CIC) to invest in hydropower projects particularly the Diamer -Bhasha dam that has power generation potential of 4500 megawatts.

A high level CIC delegation led by its President Gao Xiqing is currently visiting Pakistan to exploreinvestment opportunities in the country in various fields of economy. Ministry of Water and Power gave a detailed presentation to the CIC delegation about the investment opportunities in the power sector of the country. The ministry specially highlighted the lucrative investment opportunities in the Diamir-Bhasha dam project, which could also help mitigate energy crisis in the country.

Among others, Minister of Water and Power, Ahmed Mukhtar, Chairman Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Syed Raghib Abbas Shah, former Chairman WAPDA Muhammad Shakeel Durrani were also present during the briefing. In his detailed presentation, the Chairman WAPDA informed the Chinese delegation that work on several projects related to the construction of dam are underway which include land acquisition as 1945 acres of land has been acquired.

In addition, work also continues on the project colony at Thor valley, construction of composite model villages for resettlement of affectees and construction of bypass form Shatial to Thor Nullah to Existing KKH (35km). Source: Pakistan Observer

This is disastrous, survey conducted by engineers do not favour such a project, due to the dam being constructed in area of seizmic activity,costs incurred, eviction of locals, time it will take for this project to finish, loss of prime fertile lands, loss of livelihood, damage to the tourism industry, loss of wildlife habitat, etc. Cheaper alternatives to this project should be sought and tabled before the assembly.
