Timely action helps reduce risk of river bank erosion in Gahkuch

Gahkuch, April 5: (TR) Areas located aroung Gahkuch, the district headquarters of Ghizer, will largely remain safe from the Ghizer river this year, thanks to the timely efforts of the district administration and the local people.

Equipped with excavators the people have been able to diver the river’s flow away from the settled areas of Gahkuch and Thingdas. The excavators had been provided by NDMA, through the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA).

The ability of the people and the administration to diver the river’s flow away from the settlements is likely to protect thousands of acres of cultivable land, as well as orchards and forest.

The people living in Moshko, Damas, Gahkuch Payeen and Thingdas were living under the fear of being flooded by the river. They have thanked the district administration, especially DC Sibtain and Chief Secretary Sajad Hottiana for their efforts and leadership.

The local people have requested the authorities to keep the excavators based in Gahkuch, to avert future threats also.
