Gilgit, December 10: The administration of the Karakuram International University has decided to close the region’s only center of higher learning till 17th of December after the risk of clashes between two groups of students created a law and order situation in the city. Exams are scheduled to take place from the 17 December.

According to details, a group of students celebrated “Youm-e-Hussain” at the KIU today, a gathering attended by a very large number of students. In reaction, another group started agitation in different parts of the city, including Konodas, Airport Road and a large number of people gathered at the two bridges connecting Konodas, where the university is located, with the Gilgit city.

A large number of law enforcement officials were deployed in the city to control the situation. Later, the protesters dispersed peacefully after negotiations with SP Ali Zia and other officials.

Last year a similar controversy had resulted in the death of one police official and several people had been injured as two groups clashed near the Konodas hanging bridge.

Fearing that last year’s violence might be repeated, the KIU administration has closed down the university and law enforcement agencies have started patrolling the city to restore normalcy.

  1. KIU most prestigious educational institute is like crash hall or convention center for religious and out fit activities. Hiring on sectarian basis then you must face the music.
