Return of Yaks, the mountain kings

Yak

Asghar Khan

A flock of Yak moving slowly while taking rest on the Karakoram Highway in absence of the cargo trucks crossing over Pakistan’s border with China in Khunjerab area. During the harsh winter yaks are brought down to lower altitudes from Khunjerab, Klik, Mintika and the Pamirs of Shimshal and Chipurson valleys. Many of these yaks are sold or slaughtered as part of the household tradition of Nasaloo d. Nasaloo is a household tradition in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral to slaughter and hang the meat of yak, goat, sheep etc. in airy and cold storage during winter time. The dried meat is then used during the whole winter season.
