Farmers in Gilgit facing water shortages as the city’s historical canals filled with waste

The two historical canals, Ajeeni daljah (upper canal) and Khireeni daljah (lower canal), irrigating the provincial capital Gilgit have turned into garbage dumps. The canals are now at the verge destruction because of poor maintenance and lack of repair and cleaning. The local farmers were facing shortage of irrigation water.

These historical canals were built by the 17th century women ruler Dadi Jawari.
